The Sword of Kuromori
Alexander's Top 10 , Uncategorised / 18th February 2015

Title: The Sword of Kuromori Author: Jason Rohan The Sword of Kuromori is a fast paced book with lots of action! A boy called Kenny finds out his grandfather’s deepest secrets. He goes on a Japanese adventure to stop an earthquake happening. He thinks he has to destroy a satellite and if he doesn’t, it will fire a beam to make an earthquake but…. there is something even bigger waiting for him (well technically smaller but stronger) and his Japanese sidekick Kiyomi. He has been given the gift of sight which means he can see creatures which try to stop him from completing his mission. You will learn about these in the book! I was lucky enough to meet the author at a workshop at my local library where he told me all about it and about his trip to Japan which inspired the book. I can’t wait for the new one to come out!!! This is a great book for 10+ year olds because it is quite long and it has Japanese words in it which many confuse younger children but don’t worry there is a glossary at the back. This book is sooooooooooo good and despite it being…

Rafe went there because he enjoys art but it closed down so he had to go back to his old school. Or does he? First, before he can go back to HVMS (his old school) he has to go through an obstacle course. On his course he doesn’t know anybody. He has 8 teammates and they have to complete obstacles like building rafts and sailing them in the river. The river is called Arkansas but it is not the great river; it is only a small river named after it. Does he make friends? Does he survive? Does he complete the course? Read it to find out! I enjoyed this book it is funny and it is easy to read. Being an artist, I like the pictures! I recommend this book to 7+ readers, although it might take you a long time to read it! I give it *****. Listen to the Moon
Alexander's Top 10 , Uncategorised / 14th October 2014

Title: Listen to the Moon Author: Michael Morpurgo “A very good factual, emotional and exciting book” said The Alexander Times. “The best book I have ever read” said Alexander himself. The story is set in the middle of WW1. Merry, a 12 year old girl from America receives a letter from her father who is fighting in it. In the letter he said that he was injured so Merry and her Mum get on the deadly Lusitania to Britain. When they got near the Scilly Isles, the boat was shot by a German U-boat and sunk and this is where the story begins… In the meantime, on the Scilly Isles, Alfie and his dad are out fishing trying to catch mackerel for Friday’s tea but instead of fish, they bring home a little girl! Who is this girl? Where does she come from? Why doesn’t she speak? Is she a German spy? I am not going to tell you so you can read the book and find out then! BEWARE this book is like a roller-coaster – it has HIGHS and lows. It is an emotional book and I give it 11/10. I recommend this book to 10+ fans of…

Nathalia Buttface
Alexander's Top 10 , Uncategorised / 17th April 2014

Title: Nathalia Buttface Author: Nigel Smith This book is about a girl who has an embarrassing dad. I bet your dad is even more embarrassing than hers! NOT! Her name is Nathalia Bumole (pronounced bew-mow-lay).  On the first day at her new secondary school she hoped it would be a fresh start as in her last school her dad had embarrassed her too much! She was wrong because he embarrassed her from the minute she got there! Dad left the Atomic Dustbin (his van) in a reserved parking space for the deputy head, then in the middle of her first lesson, his van caught fire and he realised that Miss Hunny, his old school friend taught at the school. Some of the other things he did were: he made a party for Nathalia to make up for always embarrassing her but it just went wrong; he joined the school committee where he took part in events for the school, such as a brass rubbing trip where he left the teacher behind and a disco and a quiz which also went wrong! Nathalia made a new friend at her school called Darius, who was GROSS but was a nice boy deep…

The Extincts
Alexander's Top 10 , Uncategorised / 12th April 2014

Title: The Extincts Author: Veronica Cossanteli The book is about a boy called George who goes to the sweetshop one day and loses his bike. He ends up finding that it was a new girl in his class who stole it. George needed money and that’s when he saw a notice in the shop window for a job at Wormestall Farm. That’s how his adventure began! His adventure included an evil taxidermist called Diamond Pye (the new girl’s stepmother) and some creatures like, Mortifer the basilisk, Dido the Dodo, an ichthyosaur, Grissel the dragon, Tailbiter the Ouroboros and a flying A- called Lo. The moral of this book is, “Don’t worry about the end because there is really no such thing. The end of one thing you’ll find is always the beginning of another…” I  really enjoyed this book and I loved the glossary which gave me information on all the animals. I would recommend this book to people aged over 7, including mums and dads because it is funny, interesting and entertaining! I would give this book 5/5!

Monster and Chips

Title: Monster and Chips Author: David O'Connell The book was about a boy who was sent to buy chips in a diner for dinner. He had a couple of problems during his time in the diner as he was the only human there because the rest of the staff and customers were MONSTERS! All the monsters called the boy a ‘hooman’ but his name was Joe. The diner served strange foods like ‘beetle nuggets, deep-fried trouser burp and CHIPS! My favourite character was Uncton Slugglesbutt because he was cheeky and a cheat and “cheats never prosper!” I recommend this book to people who like monsters, funny stories and CHIPS! I can’t wait to read Monster and Chips – Night of the Living Bread! Rating – 100/100!

Dear Scarlett
Alexander's Top 10 , Uncategorised / 3rd February 2013

Title: Dear Scarlett Author: Fleur Hitchcock Scarlett’s dad was called Richard McNally and on Scarlett’s 11th birthday, 5 years after her father died, she got a box from her father’s solicitor which made her wonder if he really was a notorious jewel thief or something much more exciting!!! Scarlett and her new friend Ellie go on a big adventure that leads to the truth about her father. Most of the clues that would lead her through her father’s life were in the box he gave her. The most important clues were “keep looking up” and “keep up the gym” and at the end of the book she finds out how to use them. The book was very funny, scary, mysterious and exciting and it kept me entertained. My favourite character is Syd, Scarlett’s brother because he is funny and makes me laugh when he tries to speak. I recommend this book to children who like mysteries and going on adventures. I think children aged 7 would still understand the story and enjoy it even though it is for age 9+. I give this book 5/5 because it is brilliant. I would like to read more of Fleur Hitchcock’s books.
